Publishing A Novel

Son,

I have written a novel. Now – how do I get it published? I finished the novel last February. I wrote a goofy synopsis and sent it to about fifty agents. Most of the agents curtly responded, ‘Uh…No thanks.” Some of them wanted to see more samples of the story. I have received several offers from ‘subsidy publishers’ – but I am too proud to ride that bumpy road.

I have had time to reflect on the process. I realize now that I must put nearly as much energy into writing an Author Biography and Synopsis as I put into writing the book. I finished the Synopsis yesterday. I have the first draft of the Author Bio in my hand right now.

Technology has spoiled me. Many of the agents want an Author Bio, Synopsis, and sample chapters by regular post. It is so much easier, and less costly, to look first at the agents that accept queries by email. But is that really the best thing to do? I don’t know.

I have my Biography, Synopsis, and samples of the novel. Now – what is the next step?

Dad
