Nancy Belle. I am a reader. Books have been my safe haven for a great part of my life. My children all marveled at my ability to shut everything out and escape the turmoil around me, just by picking up a book. Much of what I know about this world is from the written word. My education is much greater than what is shown on paper, simply because I can and love to read. Having come to my senior years I have stories to tell and opinions to share, hopefully for your pleasure or enlightenment. Yet, perhaps some may not be in agreement or find my stories boorish, that's alright, too. Here's to my exploring and finding my way, with words!

Scapegoat Politics…

Just some things rattling in my head this morning…. Today I see headlines about Marco Rubio being booed at a gathering to discuss the recent school shooting. Booed and pinned down to say yay or nay to the NRA, pinned down to say guns were responsible for the recent and past shootings. This is disturbing.

I believe I know how the parents feel, who have had their children ripped from them. Taken by those who brought guns into schools and shot away at students, teachers and counselors.  It’s crazy, it’s humanly unforgivable even. Yet, in our country we have a Constitution that allows gun ownership and yes, even ownership of so-called assault rifles. This allowance isn’t in order for us to hunt or protect ourselves (though that is a result) it is to allow for a Militia led by the people, to be formed in the event of government overreach and/or corruption of powers. Therefore the legal status of so-called assault rifles.

Now… As for the NRA, yes, they lobby for gun ownership and promote protection of the 2nd Amendment of our Constitution. Yes, there is a lot of money that comes to the NRA and is passed on to enable this ability to promote and protect. The NRA is not the enemy… They do not promote random acts of violence ie: school shootings and do all they can to educate gun owners on safety and responsibility. It makes no sense to make, these senseless deaths of young people and those who sought to protect them, a political attack against the NRA or against Congressmen or the President. If these leaders refuse to turn against the NRA or the 2nd Amendment, that does not mean they have endorsed the death of any sons or daughters, mothers or fathers in a violent attack at their local school.

Yes, it makes us all angry that this keeps happening over and over. It makes most of us angry that the loop holes don’t get shut down or what can be done isn’t getting done. Attacking the Leaders, the NRA and insisting on complete ban of guns is not a profitable action, it’s a waste of resources and energy. Concentration on, Insistence on, better background checks, age limits, waiting periods, better reporting by agencies who have the incriminating information to keep guns away from dangerous people, agencies meaning schools as well. If we are worried about infringement of a citizen’s 2nd Amendment rights, we need to also worry about the stability of the citizen and keep the process of knowing as free from corruption as possible.

I don’t belong to the NRA and don’t ever intend to be, but I am a gun owner. I am completely aware of the danger that can come with each gun. I hear that only 7% of Americans are members of the NRA. Perhaps the power they have is more in how they are perceived than in actuality. Perhaps that perception is used to manipulate and grow a grieving crowd to gather and demand regulation that many Americans don’t want, such as banning guns. There are things that can be done other than that one thing, things that must be done to protect everyone. Compromise is a word many don’t want to hear now, yet that is how our government works, or used to. There is a compromise that will work for everyone and keep our schools safe. Our leaders need to discuss the ways to make this happen and actually follow through. Scapegoating isn’t going to get the job done, no matter how many bus loads of kids make it to Washington. Keeping the demands realistic is more likely to get heard and sink in. Especially in Washington D.C. I would also suggest bugging the heck out of your State leaders would be a great way to start.

  1. I see and hear no one on the left saying we should repeal the 2nd Amendment. I am one who does not believe a ‘well regulated militia” could oppose our present military. And most of what I hear follows your argument. Most of what I hear follows your argument:

“Concentration on, Insistence on, better background checks, age limits, waiting periods, better reporting by agencies who have the incriminating information to keep guns away from dangerous people, agencies meaning schools as well. If we are worried about infringement of a citizen’s 2nd Amendment rights, we need to also worry about the stability of the citizen and keep the process of knowing as free from corruption as possible.”

Mainstream liberals agree with you on better regulations at the point of purchase.
