Obama’s ‘Dream Team’

By Michael Falcone

Besides their impressive resumes and political star-power, a few of President-elect Barack Obama’s top cabinet choices have something else in common — hoop dreams.
Though these days Eric H. Holder Jr., Susan E. Rice and Gen. James L. Jones, may be more comfortable [...]

Finally, An Intellectual Moral President

Barack Obama is the President-elect.
We should say that again: Barack Obama is the President-elect.
It has been a long time.  We in America can be proud of ourselves.  Barack Obama is scholarly, educated in constitutional law, intellectually curious, a master communicator, and possesses the moral values of Ghandi, the wisdom of Solomon, and the courage of [...]

Note to McCain: Sarcasm Is Toxic

John McCain attempted to belittle Obama in their final debate by using sarcasm.  Sarcasm is toxic.  Sarcasm poisons relationships.  Sarcasm poisons reasonable discourse. Sarcasm poisons conversation.  Is this sarcasm an example of how McCain will deal with contentious world leaders?
The point here is quite simple. McCain uses his anger, manifested in sarcasm, to try to [...]

Can McCain Win The Debate?

McCain can win this debate – but he will have to hire Bill Clinton as a stand-in to do so.  We are seeing very clearly that words do matter – and Bill Clinton is the modern master of words.  McCain is a seasoned politician, able to deflect criticisms, able to spin content; but this debate [...]

Was McCain Right About Iraq?

John McCain has been wrong on social justice, on business regulations, and on tax breaks for Big Oil.  But probably the most egregious error has been on foreign policy, on military action, and most specifically on Iraq.  It could be more tolerable if McCain had not taken his eye off the prize – the capture [...]

Who Won The Debate, 9-26-2008

This writer watched closely. We felt that each candidate accomplished what they needed for this particular evening. Obama showed he could stand on the stage of foreign policy with McCain. After a tumultuous week of zig zagging McCain needed to show himself in command of his faculties.
Here are some reviews done by other media sources.

Book [...]

Commander in Chief – Role of a Citizen

The Constitution of the United State of America vests the power of Commander in Chief with the Executive – The President. This feels clear to this writer that the intent was for a citizen, elected by the people, to act as Commander of the military. There was purpose in this intent.
Here is a quote from [...]

The Bush Doctrine

Doctrine: ‘a principle or position or the body of principles in a branch of knowledge or system of beliefs’ – from the Merriam Webster Dictionary.

When we think of Government we think of the Wilson Doctrine or the Monroe Doctrine or the Truman Doctrine – the fundamental belief systems that guide decision making.  We have Domestic [...]

State of the Union, State of Denial

Son,
The speech writers have their challenge. Tonight’s State of the Union by President George W. Bush will be his last. He is worried about his legacy – and this is an opportunity to set the historical stage. The State of the Union has become the mantle for the President to sway public opinion.
So how does [...]

Foreign Policy – Ron Paul is almost right

Son,
I am scaring myself. I listen to Ron Paul and find merit in some of what he says. The problem with Ron Paul rests with frequent leaps of logic. He is one of those conspiracy theory folks who sees ghosts in every corner. The problem is there is occasionally a ghost and no one will [...]

The Dark Mood of Voters

Son,
This election year has few historical examples to choose from.  Perhaps in 1932 or in 1980.  Those elections were gut wrenching because of the dark mood of the populace.  The dark mood was one of the somber reality of the power of the President.  2008 is one of those pivotal moments in history when the [...]

Faith, Obedience, and Mercy – in Iraq

Son,
President George W. Bush is not God. I am not Abraham, and the children of America are not to be thoughtlessly sacrificed on a mountain in the Middle East. Faith, obedience, and mercy are noble virtues. But are there no boundaries?
Bob Dylan said it well:
“God said to Abraham, go kill me a son.
Abe said, Man, [...]

Fear Must Not Choose a President

Son,
When Benizir Bhutto was assassinated the entire world reacted. When the planes struck on 9/11 our government reacted. We Americans are again afraid. The moment we heard of the assassination all of us took two steps to the political right. Decisions made out of fear are not generally good decisions. But fear cannot be denied.
Joe [...]
