Counting Crows – Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby

Dad,

I still love the Counting Crows and their music. I have been listening to this song, Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby, about once a day for a month now, and trying to figure out what all of the imagery is about. I think that it is about a guy (the singer, Adam Duritz I guess) who is having a lonely day and goes to the movies to ease his pain, where he falls in love with the girl on the screen, but it doesn’t help. I read that the actress that the song refers to is Monica Potter, who was in Patch Adams and Con Air.

Check out the lyrics here.

There is a line “So I throw my hand into the air and it swims in the beams,” where he is in the movie theater and he is putting his hand up into the light from the projector. I like the way that he uses imagery rather than trying to tell a story. It doesn’t always make sense, but he can create a feeling and a mood like few other song writers. In this song, he conveys this felling of reminiscence and mixes in some hope and dreams. Its pretty cool.

You can hear a little clip here. Also, you can see the video on YouTube, but I am not as impressed with the imagery that was added for the video. I prefer the imagery in my head as I listen to it.

Bryan.
