I collect political memorabilia. As I looked through my junk last night I realized how much we have changed.
I have a George Wallace neck tie from his 1968 run at the Presidency. It is a thin white tie with bold red letters horizontally positioned that reads Wallace ’68. Twenty years ago I attached a campaign button to the Wallace tie – it reads Jesse Jackson ’88.

George Winston is arguably the greatest piano virtuoso of our time. Winston plays a particular type of music – often referred to as “New Age” music. “New Age” conjures images of incense, beads, and meditation – but don’t be distracted by the labels. Listen to his music and judge for yourself. This writer is biased […]

A Brief History Of The “F-Bomb” By M.J. Stephey Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 Comedian George Carlin performing his infamous 1973 monologue “Filthy Words” “The F-word is one of the most graphic, explicit and vulgar words in the English language,” U.S. Solicitor General Gregory Garre proclaimed last week during a Supreme Court hearing on the First […]

Thursday, October 30, 2008; Page A23 From the invasion of Iraq to the selection of Sarah Palin, carelessness has characterized recent episodes of faux conservatism. Tuesday’s probable repudiation of the Republican Party will punish characteristics displayed in the campaign’s closing days. Some polls show that Palin has become an even heavier weight in John McCain’s […]

In a previous post here on The Fireside, we mentioned the press conference with the President where he discussed WWIII in the context of Iran. I thought it might be beneficial to see the clip for ourselves: [wp_youtube]94LtRZ3urWY&feature=related[/wp_youtube] “I take the threat of Iran with a nuclear weapon very seriously.” I guess that would account […]

Gordon Lightfoot is one of the most polite and graceful of all Folk Legends. He is quiet and unassuming. We are grateful to have lived in his lifetime. His music and his life deserve a resurrection. From Parade Magazine Personality Parade: In 2002, Lightfoot suffered a ruptured aortic aneurysm, similar to the condition that killed […]

History tells us of a West Point General who graduated last in his class, General George Armstrong Custer. It turns out he was a little man with a huge ego. His scouts said, Don’t go down in that valley – there are ten thousand Indians waiting to scalp you. But General Custer had his eyes […]

Son, How about a little humor at the expense of Christian Religion. Ten sounds official – it sounds important – good humor by a master. Carlin reduces the Ten down to more manageable terms. Carlin is a master at examining situational ethics. Check him out. [wp_youtube]SyWEBbFwU1o[/wp_youtube] Carling is much more intuitive than he realizes. He […]

Son, We talk about religion. We talk about faith. We talk about politics. We talk about religion, faith, and politics mixed together. Sometimes we laugh and sometimes we are angry. Sometimes we are thoughtful, sometimes emotional. My mood today is more in line with George Carlin. Check him out – there is some strong language. […]

Son, As I said before, I collect political campaign paraphernalia. Some people have asked to see a picture of my George Wallace tie from the 1968 Presidential election. Here is the tie with a 1988 campaign button for Jesse Jackson. I had to attach them because of the striking contrast. What do you suppose this […]

Son, On April 29, 2008, Steven Colbert was a guest at the White House correspondents dinner. The ABC news cameras focused on President George Bush during Colbert’s presentation. He does not seem happy. My take is that Steven Colbert is a little overboard. It strikes me that the President of the United States would grow […]

Son, The attached video compares George Bush speaking over then years ago when running for Governor of Texas with his speaking skills today. So what is going on? Is the President suffering some early dementia or does the difficulty in speaking reflect the pressures of the job of President? I certainly don’t know. [wp_youtube]pw4Bhmm22xo[/wp_youtube] Dad

Son, Is linguistic skill the qualifier for intellect? Does one have to speak well to be considered intelligent? Does George Bush fail at speech, or does the problem run deeper? Joe Scarborough hosted a worthy discussion on the intelligence of President Bush. [wp_youtube]whhbPVrb5KM[/wp_youtube] Dad

Son, Our economy is at the worst state in twenty years. The candidates for president and the folks in Congress are talking about what to do. How contemptible! What have they been thinking about? How much money are we spending in Iraq? And how might that money might be used to save the U.S. Economy? […]

Son, The Republicans have had their day in office. They have been in control of the United States Government for the past seven years. If you want more of what we have, vote Republican. Son, Mitt Romney has won in Nevaadaa. But Ron Paul was Third. What does this say? Does this mean anything going into the future? Romney will toot his horn as winning another Gold Medal – a boring an overused metaphor. This win does tell us that the Mormons will support this man – even though […]

Son, You gotta give it to Ron Paul – or someone should. We are seeing huge voter turnout in Iowa and New Hampshire. What does that mean? It means that even apathetic folks who have not participated in years are so disgusted with George Bush that they will bother to come out to vote. The […]

Son, We should thank George Bush. He is the Jimmy Carter of Republicans. People talk about the Reagan Revolution – it was really the anti-Carter Revolution. Son, Barack Obama is on a toot. He is using an old line from self-help programs. Yesterday he said, “You keep doing the same thing expecting different results.” Some people call that the essence of insanity – I have a slightly different take on the old saying. Real insanity is in doing the same thing, […]

Son, A curious phenomenon is taking place. Oprah Winfrey is going on the stump for Barack Obama. So what? It is not unusual for celebrities to endorse candidates for political office. Son, Good Old Boys, buddies, cronies, buds – terms of endearment. Harry Truman had a bunch of cronies. He gave some of them jobs in the White House.
