Nancy Belle. I am a reader. Books have been my safe haven for a great part of my life. My children all marveled at my ability to shut everything out and escape the turmoil around me, just by picking up a book. Much of what I know about this world is from the written word. My education is much greater than what is shown on paper, simply because I can and love to read. Having come to my senior years I have stories to tell and opinions to share, hopefully for your pleasure or enlightenment. Yet, perhaps some may not be in agreement or find my stories boorish, that's alright, too. Here's to my exploring and finding my way, with words!

Born White

I have lived going on 71 years. Life has been tough with most accomplishments, good or bad, having been a hard row to hoe. I can say, I never thought I would see the day that so many things that people do or claim to be, is because ‘They were born that way’. I’ve always told everyone the only thing I was at my birth, was Caucasian and female, everything else I am, has been a choice, either I made it or my elders made it for me, by their choices.

But, this one, I surely, never saw coming….. The one where ‘I am racist because I was born white’. Yep, these liberals and extreme democrats have done gone out of their minds. That dog, not only don’t hunt, but he’s dead and stinking! That would be as likely as someone telling me, they were born a democratic socialist, progressive, liberal and just didn’t have any choice in it!

Come on man…. Elijah Cummings likes to say that, I kind of like it too, except I probably shouldn’t since I was born a white racist and all that?. Well, I’ll say it anyway, “Come on Man or Woman”! It’s time to quit the nonsense! Some claim ‘Systemic Racism’ that would have to imply choice wouldn’t it? I’m sorry it can’t be had both ways! But it seems they want it both ways and any other ways they can imagine.

I was born Caucasian and female and despite living in a time, where racism was rampant and in your face, I also lived in the time where brave folks did very brave things to produce change in our hometowns, states and country.
I lived in a time where a very brave black man, came to the rescue of a 15 year old, white female who was trying to get to school. She had missed the bus and was trying to walk across a bridge that spanned the ‘Missouri River’. Halfway there, fear had her frozen and she couldn’t move forward or backward.

Similar to the old truss bridge that ran from St. Joe, MO to Elwood, KS

This brave black man, stopped and asked the girl if she would like to have a ride. He did this even though it was risky for him. Just one human to another human. I will never forget the kindness he showed me that day. If I was ever racist? It was over that day! Elwood, KS was like many other small towns in those days. Our Homecoming Dance that year was brought to a halt, because some of the boys were going to get a black boy, who was seeing a white girl. The couple were run off from the dance, but these guys were going to find them and teach them a lesson. So, you see…. what that black man did for me that day was risky for both of us, but more so for him. He helped me anyway!

So, “Pshaw” to all who want to label and demean the good works that have been done and sacrifices made to have a better country these fifty plus years later. Shame to all who have politicized and stirred the masses with the ridiculous charges of racism going on right now. Shame on those who continue to live in the past and carry the torch of racism. Most Americans, of any color, are proud of our success and do all they can everyday to continue moving forward. Cause ‘Change has come’ and continues coming for most of us. Because like the girl, trapped by fear from moving either forward or backward there have been precious souls of every creed who have helped make going forward easier and backward wasn’t an option. Change has come and continues forward, no matter who clings to backward ways.
