Letterman on Bush, McCain, Palin, and Clinton

David Letterman is taking over late night television.  With this monologue, it is easy to see why.  His writers are superb, and Letterman knows how to tell a joke.  Is this merely a case of art reflecting reality – or are these just jokes?

Marketing War to Children

At a Fourth of July carnival last weekend, I was pushing our double stroller and sweating to the tinny sound of bad music while my children begged their grandparents for tickets to ride the Ferris Wheel. I was looking around and considering the impact that these events have on my children, since I remember being naively fond of them when I was young. It was almost as though things came into focus all of a sudden when I realized that about half of the games and vendors and rides had guns.

Michael Jackson, Legendary Hero or Villian

Michael Jackson is dead at age 50.  Already the hype has taken over the airways.  Even in death Jackson continues to shock the sensibilities of the entire populace, fans and foes.  Farrah Faucett died today at age 62 – no offense intended but Farrah has been bumped off the news cycle.  Michael Jackson was as […]

Polite Manners With Name Prefixes

How do you address others?  How are we supposed to address others?  The internet serves to mix cultures and polite manners.  My internet friend in San Francisco calls me Mr. Tone.  I call her Ann – thinking by so doing I would subtly give her permission to call me Ohg.  She figured me out and […]

Baking Bread – An Experience

I began baking bread about fifteen years ago. I have experimented with white bread, egg bread, sweet bread, rolls, loafs, braided loafs, and combinations of these. I now use a single recipe of my own design – it is a sweet egg bread. Recently I tried using some wheat flour. I found that if I used about half white flour and half wheat flour I had the best chance of achieving the texture and flavor I like.

Memories – Streisand, Paige, and Boyle

‘Memories,’ one of those great songs that demands great artistry.  Recognized artists like Barbara Streisand and Elaine Page do justice to this song – but how about Susan Boyle.  Page is the artist Susan Boyle claimed as her goal in artistic performance. Which rendition do you prefer. For my money – no one beats Streisand […]

Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan – an Unusual Duo

We have images of people.  We have images of singers.  We have images of music genre.  Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan are two images that contrast in my mind.  The curiosity of a County Star singing with an anti-war legend struck me as worthy of comment. After some reflection – the only approach that seemed […]

Finding a Voice With Music

Dad, I am one of those lovers of music that has no musical background. I wasn’t in band in high school; I never sang in a choir, I never even managed a successful stretch of lessons that allowed me to learn an instrument. I toyed with the idea of learning the violin, but I am […]

How to Handle a Heckler

In case you ever get the notion that you might launch your comedy career from the seats rather from the stage, I hope that this will be a reminder that the brave and the truly funny are always the people on stage. You are just the annoying person in the audience and, trust me, no one there is cheering for you.

Hypochondria – The Disease Of The Elderly

I am in the class of people politely referred to as ‘Senior.’ When I was young I thought Senior meant really old, fragile, frail, sickly, helpless. Today I understand Senior as that stage of life before Elderly. Senior is a prelude to an honest understanding of illness and mortality. Senior is that time of life where we begin to examine the ailments we will experience as elderly. I used to be a hypochondriac, but now I think I have something much worse. – it is called aging.

Colbert and Conan – String Dancing

What can we say – these two are great comedians. Steven Colbert and Conan O’Brian often play off each other – they make fun of each other and politicians should take a clue of how to react. Conan invented the ‘string dance’ and Colbert imitated Conan. Here they are together:

The Sentence – confusing a simple thought

The sentence is the most simple form of expressing a thought. The sentence must have a subject and a predicate – well, not exactly. The subject and predicate can be explicit, or simply understood. We are assuming of course that one wants to express a complete thought. But a sentence may also have an object, may have modifiers, may have connectives, and may have independent elements. So what is so hard about that? Please feel free to help with this understanding.

Andrew Lloyd Weber describes “The Music of the Night” as the most sexual song he has ever written. My take on the music is that it is the most sexual song I have ever heard. America Derailed

Rights organizations have historically been a blessing to life as we know it today. While they did not necessarily reflect the ideology of every person in this great country, their purpose was for progression and prosperity of the nation as a whole. Women’s rights, abolishment of slavery, equal opportunity employment and to a good degree, affirmative action have all been for positive change to move our country forward. Now we are stuck in a gravy bowl of economic turmoil and some of these new found organizations are just adding flour.
